Warning Signs That Your Air Conditioner May Need To Be Repaired
An air conditioner will let you know when it needs to be repaired or replaced.
These six warning signs will tell you when you should contact a professional to take a look at your AC system:
1. The Air Conditioner Doesn’t Keep the Home Cool
One of the most obvious signs your unit may require some repairs is if it’s not keeping your home cool while it’s running. If you turn the AC on and don’t feel air blowing out of any of the registers or the ducts and don’t feel significantly cooler during the day, your air conditioner will likely need to be repaired. If the air conditioner won’t turn on at all, or your home’s temperature isn’t cooling down within a reasonable period of time, your unit may be malfunctioning. Your Freon line could have a leak, the electrical connections could have a short in them, or your compressor might not work.
Before calling for repairs, you should check the filter to see if it may need to be replaced or cleaned. Checking the filter would be a cheap, easy fix to a malfunctioning cooling unit that could save you hundreds of dollars.
If there’s little or no airflow when you turn your unit on, a technician will need to look at it. Your ductwork may have leaks, clogs, or a blower motor that no longer works.
If any of the above issues are occurring, you need to contact your home warranty company or an air conditioning technician immediately.
2. Your Air Conditioner Makes an Odd Noise
If you hear strange noises from your AC unit while running, such as grinding or squealing, it will need to be fixed, even if the rest of the unit is in tip-top shape. Your air conditioner might be making odd noises because it needs a loose part tightened. It may also need to be cleaned. All of these signs are warnings that your air conditioner unit is failing. If these issues are discovered early, you will save lots of money down the road, as it can cost hundreds of dollars to make significant repairs to a broken air conditioner.
3. Your Air Conditioner Has Moldy, Musty Smells Coming Out of It
Your air conditioner may also be failing if you smell something musty coming out of the registers. Your ductwork may have signs of mold, the condensate drain may be clogged, or the cooling coils could be dirty. If you have a home warranty from Landmark, you can schedule a tune-up in the spring to ward off some of these problems. An air conditioner technician will come out and check the condensation lines, clean the condenser coils, check the refrigerant levels, thermostat, and motors, and clean the electrical connections for you.
4. The Unit is Frozen or Leaking
If your cooling unit is freezing, leaking, or puddling, your condensation line could be blocked. The line removes built-up condensation as it continuously cools your home. Excess condensation can puddle onto the ground, leak out, or freeze the coils if the line is blocked or leaking. Your unit could also have a Freon leak, which would be potentially dangerous to humans and animals. You should contact your home warranty company immediately if you notice any excess water around your unit. You could save lots of money if this problem is caught early enough before it becomes a major issue.
5. High Energy Bills
Are you running your air conditioner the same amount of time every day and noticing an uptick in your energy bills? If so, this is another red flag that your AC unit is not functioning properly. This usually means that your unit is attempting to compensate while keeping your home cool and isn’t running efficiently, eventually translating to increased cooling costs. This is also an obvious sign that your air conditioner is on its last legs due to the electrical components burning out from running at high levels or from the initial issue causing the inefficiency. You will need to contact your home warranty company or an ai conditioner technician to repair your air conditioning unit.
6. Your Air Conditioning Unit’s Age
The last thing you should take a look at is the age of your AC unit. Most units, on average, last between 15 and 20 years. If your unit is at or over 20 years of age, normal wear and tear could be wearing your unit out, which is a sign that it requires replacement.
